Interpretation of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (3-Day)

This GD&T workshop is geared towards drawing users who are only required to interpret (read) drawings. A typical audience for this workshop is Quality Assurance personnel, inspectors, technicians, manufacturing and assembly personnel, and machinists. This course is NOT recommended for design personnel that are involved in design tasks who require a working knowledge in the application of GD&T.

The course objective is to provide a common interpretation of GD&T to drawing users. Students learn that creating production drawings is a team effort between design, drafting, manufacturing, and quality control.

Class lectures are supplemented with viewgraph presentations that explain the desired concepts. Common errors presently encountered by GD&T users are illustrated with viewgraphs of actual drawings. Viewgraph photographs of inspection and manufacturing processes are shown to the class to help the students understand how the drawing would be interpreted by the drawing users. Actual hardware, tooling, and functional gages are also presented to give students a hands-on understanding.

Each student receives a textbook, "Design Dimensioning and Tolerancing" by Bruce A. Wilson, along with a large three-ring reference binder that contains class lecture material. Reading from the text is assigned each day. In addition, lecture quizzes and homework assignments are assigned.

This workshop emphasizes interpretation of drawing requirement. Inspection procedures are demonstrated to the students using actual inspection gages and tooling. Students are encouraged to perform "hands-on" inspections each day to further familiarize themselves with inspection techniques.

This GD&T course is an intensive training program. Students are expected to read from the textbook at night to prepare for the lecture quizzes. Homework is also assigned each evening. Those who desire to do well in this course will study two to four hours each day in addition to classroom time. Students are evaluated on lecture quizzes, homework, and a comprehensive final examination. Students who correctly complete 70% of the assignments receive a satisfactory completion certificate that certifies their competency in GD&T interpretation. To best serve the participants, this course is limited to a maximum attendance of 22 students.
