Review and Application of Extended Principles of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (5-day)

This GD&T workshop is intended for design and manufacturing personnel who require use of extended principles of GD&T to communicate design intent for more complex parts and assemblies. Successful completion of the 5-Day Application and Interpretation of GD&T workshop is a prerequisite for this workshop.

The course objective is to educate students in review and extended principles of GD&T that are sometimes required when specifying design intent for complex parts and assemblies. Students learn that proper GD&T use is crucial when specifying drawing requirements for complicated parts and assemblies.

Class lectures are supplemented with viewgraph presentations that explain the desired concepts. Students are shown a variety of actual drawings and assemblies where they are expected to review and assign proper GD&T. Students are able to "try out" the advanced concepts learned in class using a drawing package for a complex mechanical assembly.

Each student will need to bring a copy of the "ASME Y14.5M-1994 Dimensioning and Tolerancing" standard to the workshop each day. (TDC of Arizona will supply the ASME Y14.5M-1994 standard at cost if requested). Students receive a large three-ring reference binder that contains class lecture material and a copy of the Study Guide for Certification of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Professionals by Robert Nickolaisen. Reading from the standard is assigned after each lecture. In addition, lecture quizzes and homework assignments, primarily consisting of actual drawings, are assigned each day.

This GD&T course is an extremely intensive training program. Students are expected to read from the standard nightly to prepare for the lecture quizzes. Homework is also assigned each evening. Students that desire to do well in this course study two to six hours each day in addition to classroom time. Students are evaluated on lecture quizzes, homework, and a comprehensive final examination. Students who correctly complete 70% of the assignment receive a satisfactory completion certificate that certifies their competency in GD&T application of extended principles. To best serve the participants, this course is limited to a maximum attendance of 22 students.

Although this workshop is not geared specifically as a review for the Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Professional (GDTP) examination per ASME Y14.5.2, sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; many students will find this course an invaluable part of their preparation for the GDTP exam. Class quizzes and the final examination in the workshop are presented in a manner consistent with the GDTP exam testing process.

The five-day workshop is also offered as a public class held several times per year at various locations around the country. The public class is suited for those companies that need training for limited numbers of students.
