GD&T Training Programs

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is a language used to communicate engineering configuration from the designer to the manufacturer through a mechanical drawing. When properly applied, GD&T promotes a uniform understanding and interpretation among all persons involved with the drawing.

In 1966, industry, the Department of Defense, and educational institutions adopted a common American standard dealing with GD&T application and interpretation. The universal problem experienced with this standard, however, is the failure to adequately educate the drawing originators, manufacturers, and quality control personnel in a complete understanding of this communicative tool. As a result, both design and manufacturing suffers due to this training oversight. Until GD&T literacy exists in the United States, productivity will suffer, lawsuits will continue, and production costs will not be minimized.

Technical Documentation Consultants of Arizona currently offers five geometric dimensioning and tolerancing workshops. The three workshops are listed below:

1-Day Introduction to GD&T

This one-day workshop is intended as a introduction to the field of GD&T for a wide audience of people who have had little or no prior exposure to GD&T...

1-Day ASME Y14.5M 1982/1994 Update

This one-day GD&T workshop designed for those GD&T users who are currently using the 1982 version of the ASME Y14.5M Standard, and wish to migrate to the 1994 version of ASME Y14.5M Standard...

3-Day Interpretation of GD&T

This GD&T workshop is geared towards drawing users who are only required to interpret (read) drawings. A typical audience for this workshop is Quality Assurance personnel, inspectors, technicians, manufacturing and assembly personnel, and machinists. This course is NOT recommended for design personnel that are involved in design tasks...

5-Day Application and Interpretation of GD&T

By far our most popular workshop, this comprehensive GD&T workshop is designed for individuals who not only read drawings, but must also create drawings using proper GD&T. The typical audience for this workshop consists of design engineers, structural engineers, designers, drafters, drawing checkers, manufacturing engineers, process engineers, planners, machine programmers, tool and gage designers, toolmakers, machinists, quality engineers, CMM inspectors, parts inspectors, managers, project leaders, procurement personnel, etc. This workshop is an ideal match for just about anyone involved in any aspect of engineering documentation...

5-Day Review and Extended Principles of GD&T

This GD&T workshop is intended for design and manufacturing personnel who require use of extended principles of GD&T to communicate design intent for more complex parts and assemblies. Successful completion of the 5-Day Application and Interpretation of GD&T workshop is a prerequisite for this workshop...

3-Day Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing for Gage and Fixture Design

This GD&T workshop is intended mainly for two groups; 1) Those personnel that are required to design and fabricate gages, fixtures, and jigs; and, 2) Design personnel who design the parts that will be gaged. (It is imperative that design personnel be included in this training; gages and fixtures CANNOT be fabricated for ANY part unless the drawing contains the proper geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) callouts).
Successful completion of the 5-day Application and Interpretation of GD&T workshop is a prerequisite for this workshop.
