GDTP Certification
TDC of Arizona, Inc. instructors are GDTP certified by ASME in accordance with the qualifications of ASME Y14.5.2 in the Senior Level
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), in recognition of the need and benefits associated with standard qualifications of professionals using the Dimensioning and Tolerancing standard, ANSI/ASME Y14.5M, established the ASME Y14.5.2 Subcommittee on Certification. The Subcommittee was chartered to develop a standard that could be used as the basis for certification of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Professionals (GDTP). The ASME Y14.5.2 standard sets forth the qualifications for two levels of certification. The first level, Technologist GDTP, provides an objective measure of an individual's ability to understand drawings that have been prepared using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) as defined by the ASME Y15.5M standard. The second level, Senior Level GDTP, provides the additional objective measure of an individual's ability to select proper geometric controls as well as proper application to drawings. Senior Level applicants must document at least five years of experience in the understanding and application of GD&T. Currently, there are 104 Technologist GDTP's and 207 Senior Level GDTP's (as of 1/10/2004). Certification is based upon the current edition of ASME Y14.5M, Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and other documents referenced in the standard. Changes from the previous editions of the standard must also be understood. The ASME Y14.5.2 Standard has been recently revised to simplify the GDTP certification process. Major changes include the method in which the exam questions and passing scores are presented, and the use of testing centers for the actual GDTP examination. The examinations are now administered by Prometric Testing Center, a leading worldwide provider of comprehensive technology-based testing and assessment services. Prometric has a network of over 3500 testing centers in 141 countries. This change in the testing process now allows individuals to choose both the time and the location for their GDTP examination. (To find the nearest Prometric test center, log on to www.prometric.com, or call 1-800-967-1100). The examination fee is $360, which consists of a $50 non-refundable application fee, a $235 examination fee, and a $75 certification fee. The Technologist Level examination is a maximum of four hours in duration consisting of 100 to 150 questions. The Senior Level examination is a maximum of six hours in duration consisting of 100 to 150 questions. Both exams are closed book, multiple choice, and written examinations. In the event the exam is not passed successfully, the exam may be taken two times within a six-month period. Certification to the same edition of Y14.5 may be renewed every three years without examination if involvement with GD&T for at least 24 of the 36 months is verified. Although few employers require a GDTP certification, there is a definite advantage to holding a GDTP certification. A GDTP certification provides solid credibility and demonstrates expertise in GD&T matters, regardless of job function. The GDTP exam is a comprehensive test of GD&T knowledge and normally requires a broad study program well ahead of the examination. A well-constructed study program is essential for successful completion of the GDTP examination! TDC of Arizona is deeply committed to helping individuals complete the GDTP certification process. TDC has prepared a detailed study program for a nominal fee (fee covers study materials) that is designed to maximize study productivity and minimize wasted study time. TDC will also provide some mentoring for those individuals who sign up for the study program. Please, this study program is limited to individuals who are serious about completing the GDTP Technologist or Senior Level Certification!
